Modem is a short form of Modulator-Demodulator (MO-DEM). It Modulates (i.e., transforms or encodes) digital signals into analog signals and also Demodulates(i.e., decodes) analog signals into digital signals. Modulation can be understood better as transformation/encoding of data-information into signals for transmission purpose and demodulation as decoding of coded information (signals) into digital data.
We can classify the MODEMS on the basis of the amount of data that they send in a given unit of time usually in bits or bytes per second (bps/Bps).
